Episode 020: Boys & Sex
“Thank goodness I have boys!” Mothers who felt they didn’t need to have conversations with boys about sex and relationships suddenly realized with the #metoo movement that their job was harder because they needed to raise good men. When boys are taught to suppress emotions and that being vulnerable makes them look weak it’s natural for them to adopt behaviors that society portrays as the measure of a man. By the time a young man enters his teen years he has learned that sexual conquest is perhaps the most important measure.
The belief, fueled by porn, the hookup culture and locker room talk creates an environment where boys face a choice whether or not to embrace the most toxic aspects of masculinity. In this timely conversation, join me and my special guest, Peggy Orenstein as we explore the complexities of young mens’ attitudes and experiences that shape their outlook on sex. How their lack of education around emotions, relationships and intimacy affects them and what parents can do.
